The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides standards for the quantity of accessible outdoor tables for school use to ensure inclusivity for individuals with disabilities. Based on the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design and related guidance, the requirements for the quantity of accessible outdoor tables in school settings are as follows:
- Minimum Number of Accessible Tables: When fixed tables are provided in outdoor areas, such as school cafeterias, picnic areas, or playgrounds, at least 5% of the tables, but no less than one table, must be accessible if there are 20 or more tables. If fewer than 20 tables are provided, at least one table must be accessible, provided it is readily achievable.
- Picnic Tables: For picnic tables specifically, the number of wheelchair spaces required depends on the table’s surface perimeter. A clear ground space of 30 inches by 48 inches must be provided for each 24 linear feet of usable tabletop perimeter. Typically:
- Tables up to 9 feet long require one wheelchair space.
- Tables between 10 and 20 feet long require two wheelchair spaces.
- Longer tables may require additional spaces based on the perimeter calculation.
- Integration and Accessibility: Accessible tables must be dispersed among the various types of seating areas provided (e.g., shaded areas, near amenities) and must be on an accessible route with a clear, unobstructed path (minimum 36 inches wide) connecting to other school facilities, such as entrances or parking areas. If providing the required number of accessible tables in all areas is not readily achievable, accessible tables must be placed in an alternative accessible location, but this location must be available to all users, not exclusively for those with disabilities.
These standards ensure that students with mobility challenges can access outdoor dining and activity spaces. Schools should consult the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design and consider working with a Certified Access Specialist (CASp) to ensure compliance, especially for new constructions or alterations.
